Walking Log

As you begin a regular walking schedule, the most important consideration is to be clearly aware of your goal ahead – let’s say the next 30 days and how you’re going to get there. To help you plan ahead and stay motivated, it’s a good idea to keep a Walking Log (you can print this out and copy it). If convenient, carry your walking log around with you and refer to it during the day.

TIME PLANNED is the goal you set yourself each day. TIME WALKED is the actual time you walk – you may choose to fit in more than one daily session, so the day is divided into a.m. and p.m. and once you get into your stride you may want to walk longer than you originally planned. To make the log a little more interesting, you may want to add WHEN and WHERE you walk and include any COMMENTS about the route, the weather, your own feelings, etc.

The best time to plan your day is the previous evening when you can leisurely make your plans. Planning in this way will help you visualise the day ahead. It will keep your mind on your goal and it will help you to stay motivated. There is a sense of mastery and self-reliance that comes from meeting goals you set yourself. And when you know where you are going, it’s so much easier to get there. Remember that the journey of a thousand miles begins with the first step!
