Most of us prefer to walk and hike treks and trails during more comfortable, warmer climates as the weather makes every aspect of the adventure more easy to navigate, plus with the sun shining down on you and clear uninterrupted views all around it’s easy to see why. During warm weather it is best to be kitted out with gear that is designed to perform well in those conditions for lasting comfort and practical function much like our chosen Best 5 Walking Shorts for 2016.
Walking shorts are an alternative to pants that besides the obvious advantage of keeping the legs cooler in warm temperatures and enable ventilation, plus much more natural freedom of movement are made with premium features, high quality fabrics that can have aspects such as water repellency, moisture wicking and even UV protection built into them as well. Of course on an individual basis walking shorts can be preferred in less favourable weather conditions and likewise pants during the spring and summer.
Due to the versatile aspects of wearing Walking shorts and the variation on different types and brands our guide to the Best 5 Walking Shorts for 2016 has incorporated a wide selection with the aim of covering all the bases in finding the five we felt performed better overall.

Craghoppers Kiwi Walking Shorts
Designed as a great all-round pair of technical clothing, the Craghoppers Kiwi walking shorts are ideal for treks and trails during the spring and summer months. They have a comfortable and durable polyester and cotton fabric construction with a stain-resistant finish which is ideal, especially on muddy tracks. A gusset gives plenty of unrestricted motion for a high step whilst a part-elasticised waist at the gear ensures a comfortable, yet stretchable fit for reassuring comfort. Five out of six of the pockets have zips so you can secure all of the smaller essentials needed to be carried, plus there is a separate smartphone holder as well and even a sunglasses wipe that can be accessed in the side pocket.
Montane Terra Alpine Walking Shorts
As with all Montane outdoor clothing, their Terra Alpine shorts are built for hiking on Alpine trails and climbing mountains so can easily perform well on any more leisurely placed walk as well. Montane Granite Stretch fabric is used throughout and these shorts have a high-lift crotch so not only do you get total freedom of movement and a garment that moves with you but they are abrasion resistant and double-stitched for hard wear and tear resistance as well. In total the Montane Terra Alpine shorts have four pockets, two zip hand pockets, a security pocket that can be pulled out when required plus a mesh lined thigh pocket so there are a few options for carrying any belongings. There is even a webbing belt included to more comfortably secure the overall fit of the waistband so it won’t loosen as you move.
Berghaus Baggy Walking Shorts
For more fast paced walks or even runs, especially during the warmer weather the Berghaus Baggy shorts are an ideal choice. The main fabric is polyamide and elastane and features a durable plan weave and double in certain areas so offers a four-way stretch which combined with its long leg, stretch gusset and baggy style enables a lot of freedom of movement. It also dries fairly quickly, plus with both a DWR coating and UPF 50+ protection these Berghaus shorts effectively and efficiently keep you cool and dry during warmer weather with ease. An inner waistband is made from light mesh and there are also two vents so achieving a cooling airflow when needed most is simple. The hem and waist are also fully adjustable so you get a comfortable fit that feels secure and can be altered when you are on the move as well. The Berghaus Baggy shorts have two side and one thigh pocket which seems less than the rest of our best 5 walking shorts but as they are primarily designed for more fast-paced active wear as having a number of full pockets can quickly get in the way.
Rab Vertex Walking Shorts
The Rab Vertex shorts are ideal for general outdoor activity use during the warmer weather conditions due to their overall light weight and use of Matrix SWS stretch fabric. Similar to some of our other best 5 walking shorts, the Rab Vertex has a lot of freedom to move due to the nature of the fabrics’ construction which is heightened by an articulated cut as well. Matrix SWS fabric is also fairly hard-wearing and also protective against both the wind and ultra-violet rays to UPF 35+ so they are versatile enough for varied summer weather. Standard pocket options of two hand and one thigh can be secured with YKK zips so any small essentials will stay in place and easily accessible. Easily secured and adjusted with a double-popper waistband closure you can achieve a comfortable fit relatively quickly, even on the move.
Haglofs Mid Fjell Walking Shorts
Our final pair of Best 5 Walking Shorts for 2016 are the Haglofs Mid Fjell shorts. These highly technical and very hard-wearing shorts have been made use sustainable methods, so are perfect for anyone wanting eco-friendly clothing. The fabric body is a mix of tough Nylon and polyamide so gives plenty of durability yet stretches enough for flex and movement when you need to move quickly and step high and is coated with fluorocarbon-free DWR so makes water simply bead and roll away while maintaining the green production of these shorts. These Haglofs Fjell shorts have a lot of practical function that includes a hook loop at the belt, two handwarmer pockets, 2 side pockets with zips, bellows and in the right one a phone pocket, plus one at the back and a security one inside the waist as well so there are plenty of storage options for documents and small outdoor gear.
Any of our Best 5 Walking Shorts for the 2016 year will work well if you just want a general pair for walks and hikes a little more at ground level, but obviously some have more durability and technical features than others and others are made for life at a faster pace than normal. Overall hopefully there will be a pair amongst our walk shorts to suit your next adventure. We have also awarded three of our chosen five the best out of specific characteristics as we know that factors such as affordability, overall performance and even which looks best is important as well.
Best Value – Craghoppers Kiwi Shorts
Overall we thought that these were better in value as not only at the time of writing the cheapest the Craghoppers Kiwi shorts do everything you need in a pair of walking shorts in terms of movement, comfort and durability, the only downside is that they don’t offer much in the way of insulation so are best suited to warm climates.
Best Performance – Montane Terra Alpine Shorts
While all of these top five certainly tick the boxes for decent walking shorts, the Montane Terra Alpine shorts had the edge for us due to the quality of the fabrics and high durability. You have a lot of movement in every direction and fit very well as a result, plus there is plenty of pocket space to make use of as well.
Best Looks – Berghaus Baggy Shorts
The Berghaus Baggy Shorts we felt were the best looking of the bunch as the fit looks sleek and the detailing is quite modern and minimal without being garish so aren’t out of place on or off the trail.
