Body And Soul – Only Connect -
Fitness walking can be much more than just walking for fitness and weight loss. Inner walking can be a way ‘to connect’ with the deeper reality that we call ‘soul’ or ‘spirit’ – a way to feel not only the beating of our own pulse but the pulse of the wind and the pulse of nature and everything around us. It’s said that the difference between a good walker and a bad one is that one walks with his heart and the other with his feet. So try ‘inner walking’. Get into a comfortable rhythm, then let the distractions within your mind ‘go’ and sample the meditative benefits of walking.
How does it work? It’s something to do with the sense of freedom experienced through the leg muscles – the rhythmic too and fro of the legs, the measured beat of the right foot alternating with the left. The ground can seem almost to be alive and our senses can become sharper and more focused.
Try ‘inner walking’ before the day begins when your mind is clear or try an ‘inner walk’ in the evening after the day is done and you have more time to yourself. Inner walking is an invitation to explore yourself, to deepen your understanding of yourself.
